Hip Hop 101 Community Need

Growing up, I was exposed to many different types of music, some of them were positive but a good portion of them promoted a negative lifestyle. I believe that kids are influenced by the music they listen to. I have noticed a trend in rap music of glorifying drugs, gangs, clubbing, and degrading women. Many middle school and high school students listen to rap and try to imitate what they hear. This leads to increase violence in schools, inappropriate speech, and overall negative perception.

Community Benefits

Rap music has already been embraced by middle school and high school students. I plan on using this medium to improve literacy, open the student's mind, and positively influence their lives by:

  • Allowing students to develop free expression
  • Providing students a platform to voice their opinions
  • Improving the students' confidence levels and self-esteem

Project Details

Through rap music, I will teach the students that music is more than just beats and that there is a message to be understood. The students read existing lyrics, write and creat their own lyrics, and set their lyrics to rhyme. Music is universal and therefore can be used to attract students of all races and backgrounds.
